Chickens can’t see very well at night which is why chickens will come back to the coop before dark. If a chicken doesn’t come home before dark, it will have a difficult time finding his way home. Chickens will also roost at night to help keep them safe from predators. If a chicken is knocked off it’s roost at night it will often end up sleeping on the ground because they can’t see well enough to get back up on their roost. I have noticed our chickens are settled in on their roosts just before dusk and stay there until the morning light. To read more about the vision of chickens visit Mike the Chicken Vet’s blog.
